Best Game Hoists and Gambrels: Six Lifting and Hanging Options

Six game hoists and gambrels compared by exact load scope, mounting needs and supplied lifting hardware. Includes compact pulley kits, a receiver mast, a tree-mounted winch and two standalone gambrels.

The best game hoist or gambrel depends on the support and lifting equipment you already have. A pulley kit needs an overhead support, a receiver hoist needs a compatible vehicle, and a standalone gambrel still needs a hoist. These six options cover those choices with exact kit contents and published limits. Start with the support requirements, then check the load path and the space your harvested game will occupy.

Quick picks

1
Best general pulley kit
Highwild 700 lb 4:1 Gambrel and Hoist Kit
8.5 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

Highwild 700 lb 4:1 Gambrel and Hoist Kit

Pick Reason

A folding gambrel, 44 ft rope and self-locking 4:1 pulley make this a useful starting point when you already have a suitable overhead support. Its 700 lb rating does not establish the strength of that support.

  • 700 lb published kit rating
  • 4:1 pulley with self-locking device
  • Folding gambrel and 44 ft rope

Our Verdict
Support setup Loved 8.2/10

A separate suitable overhead support is required; the gambrel, pulley and rope are included.

Load control Loved 8.5/10

The listed 4:1 pulley system has a self-locking device; operator effort was not measured.

Packability Loved 9/10

The gambrel folds and the rope-and-pulley components can be stored separately.

2
Best 6:1 pulley option
Highwild 1,600 lb 6:1 Gambrel and Hoist Kit
8.3 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

Highwild 1,600 lb 6:1 Gambrel and Hoist Kit

Pick Reason

This is the 6:1 alternative for an existing suitable overhead setup. The included 55 ft rope and self-locking pulley distinguish it from the 700 lb kit, while its higher advertised limit remains a compatibility limit rather than proof of easier lifting.

  • 1,600 lb published kit rating
  • 6:1 pulley with self-locking device
  • 55 ft rope included

Our Verdict
Support setup Loved 8.2/10

The complete pulley-and-gambrel kit still depends on a separately verified overhead support.

Load control Loved 8.5/10

Like the 4:1 kit, this has a documented self-locking pulley. The 6:1 ratio does not establish better holding or measured effort, so control scores are equal.

Packability Loved 8.2/10

The 55 ft rope and separable hoist/gambrel are component gear; a folded size was not verified.

3
Best tree-mounted option
Viking Solutions KwikHoist Tree-Mounted Game Hoist
8.2 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

Viking Solutions KwikHoist Tree-Mounted Game Hoist

Pick Reason

The KwikHoist supplies the chain, cable winch and hook for a suitable tree, so it suits a fixed camp location without a truck receiver. Budget for a separate compatible gambrel and follow the manual's 300 lb limit and 7-inch minimum tree diameter.

  • 300 lb maximum in official manual
  • Chain-mounted cable winch
  • Gambrel sold separately
Check Price available at
Our Verdict
Support setup Loved 8/10

The manual requires a tree at least 7 inches in diameter and within the supplied chain length; gambrel is separate.

Load control Loved 8.8/10

The cable winch has an anti-reverse ratchet and latching hook; the manual limits use to harvested game and 300 lb.

Packability Loved 7.6/10

The official manual shows a removable fixed boom-and-winch assembly and directs removal when unused. Packed dimensions are unverified; conflicting 21/22 lb listing weights are not used to score it.

4
Best receiver-mounted kit
HME Truck Hitch Game Hoist Kit, 400 lb
8.1 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

HME Truck Hitch Game Hoist Kit, 400 lb

Pick Reason

Choose the HME kit when a compatible 2-inch vehicle receiver is part of your setup. The included mast, winch and gambrel avoid sourcing a separate overhead hoist, but the support foot and vehicle requirements still matter. The swivel lock controls orientation; confirm the exact winch holding and lowering instructions before use.

  • 400 lb system capacity
  • Manual winch and included gambrel
  • 74-102 in adjustable mast
Check Price available at
Our Verdict
Support setup Loved 8.8/10

The supplied mast uses a listed 2-inch receiver and adjustable support foot; vehicle suitability still needs checking.

Load control Loved 8.2/10

The supplied hand winch raises the load; the swivel pin and prevention hook control positioning. Exact vertical brake/ratchet behavior is unverified and earns no holding credit.

Packability Loved 7/10

Published 74-102 inch mast height makes this vehicle equipment; packed dimensions were not verified.

5
Best adjustable gambrel
Hawk Xtendible Cinch Gambrel, 16-25 in
7.7 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

Hawk Xtendible Cinch Gambrel, 16-25 in

Pick Reason

The Hawk is a standalone adjustable gambrel for a lifting system you already have. Its cinch cables and 16-25 inch span distinguish it from a fixed hook bar; it supplies neither a lifting mechanism nor a brake.

  • 450 lb gambrel rating
  • 16-25 in adjustable width
  • Cinch cables; separate hoist needed
Check Price available at
Our Verdict
Support setup Loved 7.4/10

The 16-25 inch adjustable spreader is known; it needs a separately chosen compatible hoist and supporting structure.

Load control Loved 7/10

Cinch cables support harvested game within the 450 lb gambrel rating; no lift or holding brake is supplied.

Packability Loved 9.2/10

The adjustable bar collapses for storage; its width changes from 16 to 25 inches.

6
Best fixed-width gambrel
Muddy Heavy Weight Steel Gambrel, 25 in
7.4 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

Muddy Heavy Weight Steel Gambrel, 25 in

Pick Reason

Buy the Muddy when you need a fixed 25-inch replacement gambrel rather than a complete hoist. Its 1/2-inch steel bar has a published 1,200 lb rating, which does not increase the rating of your existing winch, rope or support.

  • 1,200 lb gambrel rating
  • 25 in fixed width
  • 1/2 in steel bar with hooks
Check Price available at
Our Verdict
Support setup Loved 7.4/10

The fixed 25-inch spreader needs a separately selected compatible hoist and supporting structure.

Load control Loved 7/10

The 1,200 lb rating is for the gambrel alone; the hooked bar has no raising, lowering or brake mechanism.

Packability Loved 8/10

The 25-inch rigid steel bar is simple to store, but does not have an adjustable or folding width.

Published limits apply to the named kit or component. A gambrel rating does not rate your winch, rope, receiver or overhead support. The dash means a value was not verified. Rope length and mast height do not establish usable hanging height or travel. Confirm the loaded clearance, gambrel width and packed dimensions you need before buying.

How we chose these game hoists and gambrels

We compared 15 current Amazon US product pages, including inexpensive standalone gambrels, pulley kits, tree-mounted winches, receiver kits and a tripod. We checked the six selected configurations against readable brand specifications or, for the KwikHoist, its official assembly and use manual. These are research-based recommendations. BTG has not load-tested these products or measured their lifting effort.

Our ratings compare the equipment supplied: Support setup accounts for 40%, Load control for 35% and Packability for 25%. Support setup considers what else the configuration needs. Load control considers the documented lifting mechanism and any expressly specified holding device. Packability uses known folding, adjustable or fixed forms. The rating is the weighted average of those three scores, rounded to one decimal.

A bare gambrel scores lower for supplied lifting control because it needs another device to raise and lower game. That is a configuration difference, not a claim that the gambrel is poorly made. Higher published capacity also earns no automatic claim of better construction, easier lifting or longer life.

Choose the support before the hoist

For an existing overhead support

The Highwild 700 lb kit combines a folding gambrel, a self-locking pulley and 44 ft of rope. Its compact component format makes it our general pulley-kit pick. The 1,600 lb kit supplies a 6:1 arrangement and 55 ft of rope. Both still require a suitable separate support and correct rigging. Neither listing establishes the strength of a branch, ceiling attachment or frame at your site.

The 6:1 option gets the same Load control score as the 4:1 kit because both document a self-locking device. A ratio describes the pulley arrangement; it does not establish the force a person will actually need or prove that one person can manage the load.

For a suitable tree at camp

The Viking Solutions KwikHoist supplies a chain-mounted cable winch and hook. You must supply the gambrel. Its official manual sets a 300 lb maximum, limits use to harvested game and requires a tree at least 7 inches in diameter that the supplied chain can accommodate. Use those instructions rather than the Amazon bullet’s broader 6-20 inch wording. We do not extend this recommendation to poles or feeders.

The manual requires the anti-reverse ratchet to be properly engaged before lifting and directs removal from the tree when unused. That removable boom-and-winch form informs the storage assessment. The listing reports both 21 lb and 22 lb, so we have not treated either as a verified product weight.

For a vehicle receiver

The HME complete kit includes the mast, hand winch, gambrel and adjustable support foot. Its current Amazon listing specifies a 2-inch receiver, while HME publishes a 400 lb system limit and a 74-102 inch mast range. Check the exact vehicle, receiver and ground-support requirements before purchase. The mast range is not the clearance available beneath a suspended animal.

The locking swivel pin and swivel prevention hook address orientation. They do not establish the winch’s vertical brake or ratchet behavior. We verified the supplied hand winch, but not those holding details, and scored it accordingly. Obtain the exact holding and lowering instructions before use. This guide gives no permission to move a vehicle with a suspended load.

For a hoist you already own

Choose the Hawk Xtendible Cinch Gambrel when you want a 16-25 inch adjustable span and cinch cables. Choose the Muddy Heavy Weight Gambrel when a fixed 25-inch hooked bar suits your existing system. Their published 450 lb and 1,200 lb limits apply to the gambrels themselves. Neither supplies a lifting mechanism or brake, and neither raises the capacity of another component.

Why the examined tripod did not make the shortlist

We considered the VEVOR 500 lb tripod sold under ASIN B0FLXWRJ9W. Its product page describes a 94.5 inch / 2.4 m lifting height, but the linked HXCZDJ-15 manual gives 2.8 m. We could not reconcile that exact configuration and height, so it is not a recommendation here. This does not establish that the product is unsafe or that all tripods have the same issue.

We also excluded HME pulley-kit ASIN B000UPI3SG because its title says 1,200 lb while its feature text assigns the gambrel a 500 lb rating. We did not choose whichever number made the kit look stronger. Other candidates overlapped the selected configurations or lacked enough exact detail for a separate recommendation.

Questions before buying

Does a 1,200 lb gambrel make a 400 lb hoist stronger?

No. Each rating has its own scope. A higher-rated spreader does not change the complete hoist’s stated limit or establish the suitability of the support. Check the instructions and limits for the whole selected setup. Do not derive a missing system rating from component ratings.

How much hanging height will I have?

The answer depends on the exact assembled support and the space occupied by the pulley, hook, gambrel and harvested game. A 44 ft rope is not 44 ft of lift, and a 102-inch mast does not provide 102 inches of clear hanging space. The sources did not establish a common usable-travel figure for these six configurations. Confirm the dimensions that matter at your site.

What should I check when the kit arrives?

Match the model, supplied parts and instructions to the order. Inspect the components as the manufacturer directs and resolve missing parts or conflicting limits before use. Use equipment only for its stated purpose. Never suspend a person or a live animal, and do not improvise an anchor, substitute rope or add an electric drive based on this guide.

Final verdict

The Highwild 700 lb kit is our starting point for a suitable existing overhead setup because it includes a folding gambrel and self-locking pulley in a compact format. Choose its 6:1 sibling for that documented configuration, the Viking KwikHoist for a suitable tree and a separate gambrel, or the HME kit for a verified receiver setup. If you already own the lifting system, the adjustable Hawk and fixed Muddy gambrels address different spreader needs. The support, load scope and loaded clearance should decide which of these options belongs in your setup.
