The best sand pool filter for your pool depends first on what you need to replace. A pump-and-filter kit suits a compatible storable or portable above-ground pool; a standalone tank works with a separately matched pump. These six picks cover both jobs, with the exact media loads and connection requirements checked before recommendation.
Quick picks
Choose by pool type, equipment role and fittings. The cards below show four pump kits, followed by two replacement filter tanks.
Intex SX2100 26645EG Sand Filter Pump, 12-Inch Tank
A matched pump and 12-inch filter for compatible storable Intex pools. The published system flow is 1,600 GPH. Budget for media and waste routing, and check the pool-side fittings.
- Pump and 12-inch sand tank
- 1,600 GPH published system flow
- Two 38 mm connector hoses
The exact model states separate pump/system flow and a 2,800-12,800-gallon range. It is limited to compatible storable pools; this clearly documented boundary earns the same matching score as the other fully mapped picks.
The pump and two connector hoses are supplied. Media, a waste hose or pipe and any required pool-side fittings remain separate. These documented connection purchases place it in the same setup band as the other picks.
The valve and prefilter basket provide documented routine cleaning access. Servicing the tank internals requires opening the filter; no comparative care-time evidence supports a higher score than the other picks.
Intex SX3000 26651EG Sand Filter Pump, 16-Inch Tank
A matched pump and 16-inch filter for compatible storable Intex pools. The published system flow is 2,450 GPH. Budget for media and waste routing, and check the pool-side fittings.
- Pump and 16-inch sand tank
- 2,450 GPH published system flow
- 120 lb sand or 85 lb glass
The exact model states separate pump/system flow and a 5,500-19,600-gallon range. It is limited to compatible storable pools; this clearly documented boundary earns the same matching score as the other fully mapped picks.

AQUASTRONG SFPV120T Sand Filter Pump, 12-Inch Tank with Timer
A 12-inch pump kit with a timer, 1.25-inch hose adapters and a 1.5-inch conversion kit for compatible portable above-ground pools. Its published system flow is 2,000 GPH. Budget for external pool hoses and media.
- 2,000 GPH published system flow
- 12-inch tank with timer
- Up to 50 lb sand capacity
The exact SFPV model and family manual distinguish pump/system flow and pool scope. Portable above-ground use is a firm limit. The resolved model mapping supports the same matching score as the other fully documented picks.
The pump, interconnecting hose and adapter hardware are supplied. External pool hoses are absent from the packing list, and media needs budgeting. These purchases place both SFPV sizes in the same setup band as the other picks.
The manual documents the valve, drain, pump-basket cleaning and component breakdown. Tank-internal access requires opening the filter; it supplies no separate filter-ball cleaning procedure or comparative care-time result.
AQUASTRONG SFPV140T Sand Filter Pump, 14-Inch Tank with Timer
A 14-inch pump kit with a timer, 1.25-inch hose adapters and a 1.5-inch conversion kit for compatible portable above-ground pools. Its published system flow is 2,400 GPH. Budget for external pool hoses and media.

Hayward ProSeries W3S180T Sand Filter, 18-Inch Tank with 1.5-Inch Valve
A standalone 18-inch replacement filter with a 1.5-inch FIP valve for an already suitable pump. Check the 35 GPM filter design rating against the system. Budget for media and connecting fittings.
- 18-inch filter tank and valve
- 150 lb silica sand requirement
- 35 GPM filter design rating
The exact W3 model maps to its documented filter design flow, media load and 1.5-inch FIP valve. The pump remains separately matched, which is the intended replacement role rather than a fit-information defect.
The selected offer supplies the filter and valve for a replacement job. An owner may retain a suitable pump; media and connecting plumbing still need checking. This earns the same setup band without penalizing the absence of a bundled pump.
A drain, folding laterals and a parts diagram document service access. Internal work still requires opening the tank; the evidence does not establish a meaningful care-score difference from the other picks.
Hayward ProSeries W3S244T Sand Filter, 24-Inch Tank with 1.5-Inch Valve
A standalone 24-inch replacement filter with a 1.5-inch FIP valve for an already suitable pump. Check the 62 GPM filter design rating against the system. Budget for media and connecting fittings.

Source notes: Intex SX2100 and SX3000 specifications, the AQUASTRONG SFPV manual, and the Hayward ProSeries manual and current top-mount sell sheet. The S180T’s 35 GPM figure comes from an older manufacturer brochure, corroborated by the current exact-model dealer listing. These are published specifications, not BTG measurements.
Pump flow, system flow and filter design flow describe different things. The Intex and AQUASTRONG rows separate pump output from the lower published system figure. Hayward’s GPM values are filter design ratings; neither Hayward offer includes a pump. Do not treat the largest number in this table as proof of better filtration or a suitable pool match.
Which setup fits your pool?
Intex SX2100 and SX3000: check the pool fittings first
Choose between these two by the supported pool and connection arrangement. Intex lists the SX2100 for 2,800 to 12,800 gallons and the SX3000 for 5,500 to 19,600 gallons. The family manual limits these pumps to storable pools and excludes permanently installed pools. A permanent above-ground pool is therefore not automatically a supported application.
Both selected kits supply two 38 mm connector hoses with nut/union connections. The manual also documents an Adapter B route for certain 32 mm Intex pool fittings, using separate parts as needed. Match the actual pool-side fittings rather than assuming any hose of the same nominal diameter will connect.
Media and a waste/drain hose or pipe are separate purchases under the manual. The exact SX2100 page also explicitly excludes plunger valves and 38 mm outlet fittings. For the SX3000, check its supplied parts and your pool-side hardware separately. Its exact page does not supply that same exclusion statement.
The 12-inch SX2100 needs 50 lb of the specified #20 silica sand or 35 lb of glass media. The 16-inch SX3000 needs 120 lb of sand or 85 lb of glass. Those are alternative loads for the named models; the weights are not interchangeable.
AQUASTRONG SFPV120T and SFPV140T: allow for pool hoses
These timer-equipped kits offer 12- and 14-inch tanks with published system flows of 2,000 and 2,400 GPH respectively. Their manual restricts use to portable above-ground pools and excludes inground and permanently installed pools. Confirm that your pool falls within that application before comparing tank sizes.
The packing list includes one pump-to-filter interconnecting hose, three 1.25-inch hose adapters with clamps, and a five-piece 1.5-inch conversion kit. External pool hoses are absent from that list, so budget for them and for media. The connection hardware offers more than one route, but the documentation does not establish a universal fit or specify every mating thread standard and pitch. Check the counterpart on your pool.
The SFPV120T manual specifies 35 to 50 lb of sand or 1.5 lb of the specified AQUASTRONG filter balls. The SFPV140T specifies 50 to 70 lb of sand or 2.5 lb of those balls. Use the media instructions for the exact model rather than substituting an equal weight of a different medium.
There is a source discrepancy worth checking when shopping: the SFPV140T manufacturer page contains descriptive text with 3,800/2,700 GPH figures, while its exact-model table and family manual give 3,000 GPH pump flow and 2,400 GPH system flow. This guide uses the exact-model table and manual figures, corroborated by the selected offer.
Hayward W3S180T and W3S244T: replace the tank, retain a suitable pump
These offers contain a filter and top-mounted valve. If your existing pump is already suitable, a tank replacement need not mean buying another pump. Check the pump, plumbing and intended flow together before selecting the 18-inch W3S180T or 24-inch W3S244T.
The selected models use the 1.5-inch FIP SP0714T valve arrangement. The W3S244T here is distinct from the 2-inch T2 variant; verify the full model suffix when ordering. Nominal pipe size alone does not settle how the existing fittings and valve will join.
The required sand loads are 150 lb for the S180T and 300 lb for the S244T. Plan a media and connecting-fittings budget for these filter-only offers. That budget is a conservative buying allowance based on the selected offers and required loads: the Hayward manual itself does not explicitly state that sand is excluded.
How we selected and rated these filters
We screened 18 current candidates and retained six exact offers across three brands. Research checked the selected ASIN, model, equipment package, manufacturer documents, media requirements and connection hardware. We excluded media-only products and candidates with unresolved model, interface or sand-compatibility conflicts. BTG did not physically test these filters or compare their particle-capture performance.
Each card uses the same three editorial dimensions: System Matching (40%), Setup Package (30%) and Routine Care (30%). System Matching considers how clearly the model’s role, pool limits and flow type are documented. Setup Package considers included hardware and the remaining preparation for that role. Routine Care considers documented controls, cleaning access, drains and service parts.
All six receive 9 for System Matching, 8 for Setup Package and 8 for Routine Care, giving an 8.4 weighted rating. Available evidence does not support finer differences within these dimensions. The six therefore tie. Numbering groups Intex kits, AQUASTRONG kits and Hayward tanks, with the smaller tank first within each brand. Choose the applicable setup; a lower card number does not establish better filtration, greater safety or less cleaning.
Care and water-treatment limits
The manuals document valve controls, drains and service components; the pump kits also have basket-cleaning provisions. Internal filter service still requires access to the tank. These features do not establish a maintenance-free system, a longer service life or a comparative cleaning-time advantage. Follow the exact manufacturer instructions for your model and media, including its electrical and pressure precautions.
A sand filter is one part of pool-water care. The Intex manual explicitly states that filtration does not sanitize the pool. Neither a published flow figure nor a stated gallon range establishes that your water-treatment needs are met.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy by the advertised GPH number alone?
No. First identify whether the number is pump flow, assembled-system flow or a filter design rating. Then match the complete setup, supported pool type and connections. The Hayward filters require a separately matched pump, so their design ratings are not the output of an included motor.
Do all six packages come ready to connect?
Allow for media and connection checks. Intex supplies two connector hoses but requires separate waste routing. AQUASTRONG lists an interconnecting hose and adapter hardware, with external pool hoses absent from the packing list. The Hayward tanks need compatible connecting plumbing and a suitable separate pump.
Can sand, glass and filter balls be swapped by weight?
No. The listed alternatives and their loads apply to the specified models. Intex gives separate sand and glass weights; AQUASTRONG gives separate sand and specified-ball loads. The selected Hayward documentation specifies #20 silica sand. This guide does not approve a different medium for those tanks.
Final verdict
For a compatible storable Intex pool, start with the SX2100 or SX3000 and verify the exact fittings and media load. For a portable above-ground pool needing a timer-equipped kit, compare the SFPV120T and SFPV140T, including the external hoses you may need. For an existing system with a suitable pump, the Hayward W3S180T and W3S244T offer two tank sizes with clearly stated design flow and sand requirements. The useful choice is the one that matches the pool and the equipment already in place.
