Best Carpet Cleaning Machines: 6 Upright and Spot Cleaners Compared

Six upright and portable carpet cleaners compared by exact configuration, liquid controls and after-use care, with floor-focused and spot-cleaning roles kept clear.

For room carpets with automatic liquid controls, start with the Hoover SmartWash+. The BISSELL TurboClean PET 3948 makes more sense when you want a compact upright with a hose. For occasional spills and small upholstery jobs, the Little Green Mini is the smaller tool to store. Our six picks cover these different jobs, with exact model and kit details below.

Quick picks

These recommendations use published specifications and manuals, without BTG hands-on cleaning or drying tests.

1
Automatic room cleaning
Hoover SmartWash+ FH52000 Automatic Carpet Cleaner
9 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

Hoover SmartWash+ FH52000 Automatic Carpet Cleaner

Pick Reason

Choose this for room carpets when you want the machine to control liquid dispensing as you move. The selected FH52000 listing includes an 8-foot hose, a 2-in-1 pet tool and a stair tool. Separate solution dosing and a Dry Only button reduce manual control steps. It is still an upright machine that needs tanks and brushes cleaned after use.

  • Direction-based wash and extraction
  • 8-ft hose with two cleaning tools
  • Removable nozzle and brushrolls

Our Verdict
Coverage & Tools Loved 9.1/10

An upright head and the selected two-tool hose kit cover room carpets, upholstery spots and stairs. Tool contents are verified on this FH52000 ASIN.

Liquid Controls Loved 9.3/10

Separate solution dosing, automatic forward wash/backward extraction and a Dry Only button give it the most automated liquid controls in this selection.

Care & Storage Loved 8.5/10

The nozzle and brushes remove for cleaning. An upright body, hose and multiple tanks still require storage and after-use care.

2
Three-tool upright
Shark CarpetXpert EX201 Upright Carpet Cleaner with StainStriker
8.6 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

Shark CarpetXpert EX201 Upright Carpet Cleaner with StainStriker

Pick Reason

The EX201 suits buyers who want one upright with a supplied hand-tool kit for different spot jobs. This exact listing includes a 3.5-inch stain tool, crevice tool and pet tool. Its hand-tool mode combines Deep Clean Pro and OXY supplies. Choose it with the multi-tank rinsing routine in mind; the supplied chemicals and modes need their own instructions.

  • 3.5-in stain, crevice and pet tools
  • Separate StainStriker OXY tank
  • Quick Dry extraction mode

Our Verdict
Coverage & Tools Loved 9.2/10

The upright floor head and three supplied cleaning tools cover room carpets, upholstery spots and narrow areas.

Liquid Controls Loved 8.6/10

The main tank takes water and Deep Clean Pro, while the smaller tank takes OXY. Forward wash/backward extraction and Quick Dry are documented; two solution supplies add preparation steps.

Care & Storage Loved 7.7/10

The tank float and filter, brushroll, tools and hose are cleanable. Several parts need rinsing and air drying after use.

3
Compact upright with hose
BISSELL TurboClean PET 3948 Upright Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner
8.4 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

BISSELL TurboClean PET 3948 Upright Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner

Pick Reason

The 3948 is the compact choice when floor cleaning and a hose kit both matter. Its 7.5-inch path and 2.36-liter clean tank match the listed 3952 figures, but this package adds a 7-foot hose, a 4-inch self-cleaning stain tool and a spraying crevice tool. The narrow head is a tradeoff for large rooms.

  • 7.5-in floor-cleaning path
  • 7-ft hose and two cleaning tools
  • 2.36-L clean-water tank

Our Verdict
Coverage & Tools Loved 8.7/10

The compact floor head and two-tool hose kit cover more jobs than the floor-focused 3952 package, with a narrower path than Big Green.

Liquid Controls Loved 7.8/10

Separate clean and recovery tanks use formula fill lines and trigger-controlled spraying. You measure the formula and release the trigger for extraction passes.

Care & Storage Loved 8.8/10

The compact body, removable nozzle and documented tank/tool rinsing provisions help with after-use care. The brushroll remains active in hose use, so follow the manual setup.

4
Small spot-cleaning kit
BISSELL Little Green Mini 4075 Portable Carpet Cleaner
8.1 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

BISSELL Little Green Mini 4075 Portable Carpet Cleaner

Pick Reason

Choose the Little Green Mini for spills and small upholstery or car-interior jobs where the fabric permits wet extraction. The 4075 kit supplies a 4-inch stain tool and a HydroRinse hose-cleaning accessory. Its listed 7-pound body stores more easily than an upright, while the 16-ounce clean tank and 4-foot hose limit the size and reach of a session.

  • 4-in tool with removable lens
  • HydroRinse hose-cleaning accessory
  • Listed 7-lb portable body

Our Verdict
Coverage & Tools Loved 7.6/10

A 4-inch cleaning tool and 4-foot hose suit targeted spots. Cleaning room carpets by hand takes a different approach from pushing an upright head across the floor.

Liquid Controls Loved 7.8/10

Separate small clean/recovery tanks use formula fill lines and manual trigger spraying. Release the trigger for extraction passes; small capacity is listed, not a measured refill frequency.

Care & Storage Loved 9.3/10

The compact 7-pound body, removable tool lens and supplied HydroRinse accessory support small-space storage and hose/tool care. Tanks still need rinsing and drying.

5
Large carpet areas
BISSELL Big Green 86T3 Professional Carpet Cleaner
8 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

BISSELL Big Green 86T3 Professional Carpet Cleaner

Pick Reason

Big Green is the larger upright to consider for substantial carpeted areas. BISSELL lists a 10.5-inch path, a 1.75-gallon clean tank and a 25-foot cord. The 9-foot hose and 6-inch tool cover above-floor spots. Its listed 42-pound weight makes carrying and storage a major purchase consideration. We have not measured its cleaning speed or drying time.

  • 10.5-in cleaning path
  • 1.75-gal clean tank
  • 9-ft hose with 6-in stain tool

Our Verdict
Coverage & Tools Loved 8.7/10

The 10.5-inch head, 25-foot cord and 9-foot hose cover room carpets and above-floor spots. Its single 6-inch cleaning tool gives you fewer attachments than the multi-tool kits.

Liquid Controls Loved 7.9/10

Large separate clean and recovery tanks hold liquid apart, but formula is measured into the clean tank and spraying remains trigger-controlled. Capacity does not prove extraction quality.

Care & Storage Loved 7.2/10

The manual documents tank, hose and tool rinsing. The listed 42-pound upright is a substantial carrying and storage commitment compared with the compact formats.

6
Floor-focused budget pick
BISSELL TurboClean 3952 Upright Carpet Cleaner
7.9 ★★★★★ ★★★★★

BISSELL TurboClean 3952 Upright Carpet Cleaner

Pick Reason

The 3952 is for buyers concentrating on small carpeted floor areas. It shares the 3948's listed 7.5-inch path and 2.36-liter clean tank, but the selected package lists trial formulas without that model's hose and cleaning-tool kit. Spend for the 3948 if upholstery or stair tools are part of the job.

  • 7.5-in floor-cleaning path
  • 2.36-L clean-water tank
  • Removable nozzle for rinsing

Our Verdict
Coverage & Tools Loved 7.4/10

The compact floor head covers small carpeted areas. The selected 3952 package does not list the 3948 hose and cleaning-tool kit.

Liquid Controls Loved 7.8/10

Separate clean/recovery tanks use measured formula fill lines and trigger spraying. Release the trigger for extraction passes according to the selected formula instructions.

Care & Storage Loved 8.8/10

A compact floor-focused layout and removable nozzle and tanks provide access for rinsing. It still needs tank emptying, cleaning and drying after use.

Values retain the manufacturers’ units. A dash means we did not establish a comparable value for the exact selected model. The tool column counts cleaning attachments, so it excludes formula bottles and hose-rinsing accessories. The 3952 entry describes its listed package, rather than promising compatibility with separately purchased tools.

Sources: TurboClean PET 3948, TurboClean 3952, Big Green 86T3, Little Green Mini 4075, Hoover FH52000 manual and Shark EX201 guide. The product links in the cards identify the selected US offers and their supplied kits.

Choose the cleaning format first

An upright lets you push a cleaning head across a room. A portable spot cleaner has you work through a hand tool. That distinction matters more than a long list of stain claims: the Mini is a sensible choice for a small spill, while room carpets call for an upright format.

Among the uprights, the 3948 combines a compact floor head with a hose kit. Big Green has a wider 10.5-inch path and a much larger listed clean tank, but its 42-pound listed weight deserves attention before you plan to carry it upstairs. The 3952 is the floor-focused option when you do not need the supplied hose and tools of the other uprights.

BISSELL 3952 versus 3948: check the model number

BISSELL lists the same 7.5-inch cleaning path and 2.36-liter clean tank for these two models. The 3948 adds a 7-foot hose, a 4-inch self-cleaning stain tool and a spraying crevice tool. Those are two physical cleaning tools. A description of a tool as 2-in-1 does not turn it into two separate attachments.

The 3952 package lists two trial formulas without the 3948 hose and tool kit. Choose the 3948 package if above-floor cleaning is part of your purchase plan. The matching tank and path figures do not establish identical cleaning performance, and we did not conduct a side-by-side stain test.

Automatic controls still need the right solution

The SmartWash+ meters solution separately and changes between washing and extraction as you move forward and backward. Its Dry Only button gives you an extraction-only option. The selected FH52000 offer supplies an 8-foot hose, a 2-in-1 pet tool and a stair tool. Hoover’s current product page identifies FH52000V, so we used the selected FH52000 listing for this kit and did not transfer the sibling model’s missing measurements.

The EX201 also dispenses on the forward stroke and extracts on the backward stroke. Its hand-tool StainStriker mode uses the main Deep Clean Pro mixture together with a separate OXY supply. The manual specifies Quick Dry mode for extraction passes. Follow the instructions for each tank; this is a different preparation routine from filling a single premixed solution tank.

The two TurboClean models, Big Green and Mini use measured formula preparation and a spray trigger. Their fill directions vary. A larger tank holds more liquid, but capacity alone cannot tell you how well a machine extracts water or how long your carpet will take to dry.

Check the fabric and plan for cleanup

Read the carpet, rug or furniture maker’s wet-cleaning instructions before choosing a machine. Do not assume that wool, silk, delicate rugs or every upholstery fabric can be wet extracted. The Big Green guide calls for suitable upholstery codes and excludes S/X-coded materials and certain delicate fabrics. A missing or unclear care label is a reason to confirm with the fabric or furniture manufacturer before cleaning.

Vacuum loose dry debris first. These buying recommendations concern wet extraction after that step. Use the cleaning solution intended for the exact machine and follow its fill lines. The TurboClean, Mini and EX201 guides give a 140°F/60°C maximum for their water-fill instructions. Big Green calls for hot tap water. Do not turn those directions into one cross-brand dilution recipe, and never boil or microwave tank water.

After cleaning, unplug the machine before removing parts. Empty and rinse the recovery tank, then follow the manual for the nozzle, brushroll, filter, hose and tools. Let the washed parts dry before storage. HydroRinse on the Mini and the self-cleaning tool on the 3948 help with specific parts of this routine; they do not remove the need to empty and care for the machine.

For hose work with the 3948, the manual warns that the brushroll stays on. Follow its upright-position and carpet-protection directions. Keep an upright secure when working on stairs, rather than placing it where it can fall. Each model’s manual remains the guide for setup and use.

How we selected and rated these machines

We screened 25 current Amazon US candidates and selected six exact configurations from BISSELL, Hoover and Shark. We checked model numbers, included tools and operating instructions against the selected offers and official product pages or manuals. Affordable floor-focused machines and portable spot cleaners stayed in the comparison alongside larger uprights.

Our editorial ratings describe Coverage & Tools (40%), Liquid Controls (35%) and Care & Storage (25%). Each rating is the weighted average of those three scores, rounded to one decimal. Broad room-and-spot coverage earns more credit than a dedicated spot-cleaning role, so use the pick description to choose for your own job. A lower overall rating does not make a small spot cleaner the wrong purchase for a small spill.

BTG did not test stain removal, extraction, drying time, noise, comfort or durability. Independent test guides from Consumer Analysis and Vacuum Wars provide separate testing perspectives. We did not turn their results for related model families into measurements of these exact current kits.

We left conflicting or missing figures out of the normalized comparison. BISSELL’s 3952 page uses both less-than-13-pound wording and a 13-pound specification. The EX201 Amazon listing and official comparison also disagree on weight. Neither conflict earns a weight-based advantage in our ratings. The US Mini page links a 4075-family guide with Canadian support text; we used its operating instructions without inferring US warranty terms.

Common questions

Can a carpet cleaner replace a dry vacuum?

Vacuum loose dry debris before wet extraction, as the machine instructions require. The EX201 guide explicitly says it is not designed for dry vacuuming. Choose a separate vacuum for that job.

Does a hose-cleaning accessory clean the whole machine?

No. It addresses the hose or tool it is designed to rinse. The recovery tank and other removable parts still need the model-specific after-use care described in the manual.

Which machine should I choose for occasional small spills?

The Little Green Mini 4075 is our compact spot-cleaning pick. Its 4-inch tool, 4-foot hose and small tank suit that role. Choose an upright with a hose kit when the same purchase also needs to cover room carpets.

Final verdict

The Hoover SmartWash+ FH52000 is the first option to consider for room cleaning with automatic liquid controls. Choose the BISSELL 3948 for a compact upright with a supplied hose kit, or the Mini 4075 for small spot jobs. Big Green belongs on the shortlist when its wider head and large tank fit your space and carrying needs. For floor-focused cleaning on a smaller budget, compare the 3952 package carefully with the 3948 before ordering.
